Diagnosis
- Screening Test- a blood test which determines which genes you carry. You can carry hemoglobins or carry the trait(ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).
- Newborn Screening- After birth a newborn’s blood is collected and is tested in labs. The lab results show if the child has sickle cell or if it has the trait(ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).
- If the child does have sickle cell anemia , it is test again for reassurance.
- Prenatal Screening- looks for the sickle hemoglobin gene as early as 8 to 10 weeks of pregnancy. Fluid from the outside of the embryo can be tested as well as tissue from the placenta(ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
